The standard thickness of any sample of paper or paper board is measured by placing one or more test specimens taken from the sample under test on a flat anvil and pressing it down with the help of a circular indenter applying a pressure of 1 ± 0.1 kg/cm2 on the test specimen. The diameter of indenter used for measuring the thickness is between 14 and 16.5 mm, while the pressure is applied by means of a dead weight to give more consistent readings.
